At Home With Rachel, Pete & Milo

Like so many of us with fur babies these days, Rachel & Pete weren't exactly looking for a pet when her dog Milo came into her life. Okay, who are we kidding…she was casually searching for one when she found herself on Pet Finder and saw Milo’s grinning face appear on her screen.

From there, she convinced her partner Pete to go with her to take a look at Milo, so they called it an early day and made the drive out to see who would soon become their newest roommate.

Upon first seeing Milo, Rachel says the first thing she noticed on Milo was the biggest paws she’s ever seen on a puppy. At that moment, she knew he was ours.

“He is the sweetest, most sensitive soul and he loves everyone. He keeps us laughing every day because he will show up with random objects from the house in his mouth (a hammer, books, computer paper, shoes) because he wants us to chase him,” she said. “We love him so much and can't imagine our lives without him.”

Rachel & Pete love to travel and were looking for peace of mind knowing that their fur baby is well taken care of when they're gone from home.

When she was recommended Happy Tails a few years ago she decided to give us a try and hasn’t turned back since, even recommending us to two other friends in their neighborhood in the meantime!

Her furry Milo loves the care and the attention that comes from the live-in sitter when his parents are away from home. One of Milo’s favorite sitters is Amanda, our featured sitter last month. She always has treats ready for Milo and is so sweet and considerate of him, Rachel said.

“It is such a nice feeling to have someone you can trust watching your fur baby and I know they have a lot of fun together,” she added.

Milo especially enjoys the extra-long walks that come with having Amanda take care of him.

Sitter Spotlight: Nomsa

Meet Nomsa! Nomsa has been with us here at Happy Tails for almost a year and we love having her!

Nomsa has always loved dogs and when she couldn’t have any pets growing up due to a family member having an allergy she looked to fill the void with pet sitting. She started sitting for fur babies of friends and family and found it to be a great way to interact with animals as a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity.

She thoroughly enjoys being able to get to know all of the different Happy Tails pets she helps care for and loves learning about each one’s unique and quirky personality.

“It's endearing to watch and get to know them and I always get a little sentimental about having to leave them toward the end of my stay,” she said.

While caring for the fur babies, Nomsa said she finds herself oftentimes creating and narrating a story about the pets she’s with and the time they spent together. She’s also an early riser, which she said is great for taking care of furry friends who are up early.

In her free time, she enjoys reading for fun, practicing yoga, hanging out, and having brunch with friends or family. Her not-so-guilty pleasure is binge-watching what she admits to watching an insane amount of Real Housewives!

Nomsa keeps a busy schedule with instructing yoga classes, pursuing her Reiki certification, and preparing for an upcoming yoga and hiking retreat in Utah this Spring. This year she is hoping to be more present and connected to those that she is around, and with the experiences she is undergoing in her daily life.

Make sure to say hi to Nomsa next time you see her walking a fur baby and ask her what her favorite yoga pose is!

Dog Training Education Month

As seasoned sitters, we have seen and heard it all from our clients when it comes to their pets behavior! Maybe a dog that barks incessantly, climbs on furniture, unwanted jumping, chewing, and fights with other dogs. Dog training can be expensive, time intensive and parallel to parenting when you aren’t quite ready to become a parent. Dog training isn’t solely for good dog behavior, but essential to a long lasting, healthy relationship with your furry friend. From training collars to training camps, we’ve put together a brief page of where to get started with your dog training this month.

DOG TRAINING EDUCATION MONTH ACTIVITIES

  1. Go to a dog training class

Find a dog training class or activity in your city. Training a dog alone sounds exhausting - don't do it alone!

  2. Teach your dog a new skill

In lieu of the 'training' part of this month, see how well your dog is trained by teaching a new trick or skill. Maybe you'll learn something new about your pup - what it likes or doesn't like.

  3. Check out a new dog park.

Go to a new dog park around town and let your pup off the leash. Most dog parks don't require a leash as long as they are within the gated vicinity, and it's a great spot to let your dog run around while you catch up on emails or read a new book. It's a win- win!

WHY WE LOVE DOG TRAINING EDUCATION MONTH

  1. Let dogs be dogs

The outdoors is a great place to let dogs act like puppies and for puppies to well, just be puppies. Dog parks, certain hikes, and open spaces are great for dogs without leashes.

  2. Doggy wants a treat

Teach your furry friend a new trick to flaunt to the rest of the dogs in your hood. Treats can help with dog trick training - and what dog doesn't want a treat?

  3. A friendly dog is a good dog

The only thing worse than a poorly trained dog running around, is the number of them that end up in the pound for bad behavior. Investing the time to properly train your dog, is investing time into a 'good' dog long term.
